Presidential Limo and a Sense of Humour
During a lecture at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, American conservative pundit and political theorist Bill Bennett brought together his views about past and current presidents, his own career in education, and the coming presidential election.
Several hundred people came to see Bennett, whom President Reagan appointed as head of the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1981. In 1985, Bennett served under Reagan as the U.S. secretary of education. Bennett, who called the Reagan Library "The Republican Vatican," praised Reagan as genial and someone who stood by him when he was criticized in the press.
Bennett told the audience stories reflecting Reagan's sense of humour, including when Reagan wanted to test an outside speaker on the presidential limousine. After Reagan made Bennett get out of the vehicle and move farther away, the limousine sped off leaving Bennett behind, only to come back later to pick him up. He said, while he hoped for another Ronald Reagan (as president), he was resigned to the fact that there won't ever be another Ronald Reagan.
